Driving from San Diego to Ensenada is quick and has some really breathtaking coastal views. The drive is mainly on a toll road which is well paved and well maintained all the way. The toll is currently about $2.45 at each of three booths on the drive between San Diego and Ensenada.
The toll road is a scenic drive along beautiful cliffs and takes approximately 90 minutes with the three toll booths along the way. Ensenada is a only a few miles after you pass through the last toll booth after crossing the border. The road you will drive on goes through the whole city of Tijuana, and parallels the border fence for a few miles until you hit the coast. The Green Angels patrol the toll road and help those whose vehicles break down, usually at no charge since that is a government entity.
There are buses that will make the trip from San Diego to Ensenada, but there will be so much beautiful scenery and places you want to stop and take photos. Of course that wouldn’t be possible on a bus. U.S. currency is accepted everywhere, and English is spoken by most people in Baja California as well.
If you stop in Rosarito, which is along the way to Ensenada, you’ll find a long stretch of beautiful, clean, sandy beach. Ensenada is a port city so has almost no beach. If you are looking for great beaches you should stop in Rosarito. Just a few miles south of the city is a turnoff for Estero Beach.
The best places on the drive from San Diego to Ensenada are La Fonda, a hotel at the La Mision exit south of Rosarito. The restaurant features a large patio area on a cliff, and they serve huge portions of Mexican or American-style food. The prices are very reasonable. For something more formal, you may want to try Las Rosas, which is in northern Ensenada. If you order the coffee after sundown, the staff dims the lights in the restaurant and pours the coffee flaming into mugs.
