Seventy miles south from the U.S. border, where Highway 1’s scenic route meets Highway 3 just north of Ensenada, you will find a pleasant surprise in the Valle de Guadelupe. The wineries of the Ruta del Vino (“Route of Wine”), which line 14 miles of Highway 3, provide a great introduction to Mexican wine.

Just two miles from the route’s beginning is La Casa Vieja winery (www.lacasaviejabaja.com), featuring wine tasting, a gift shop and art gallery. Halfway up the route, at KM 93, is Vina de Liceaga winery (www.vinosliceaga.com), which has won awards for its Merlot and Grappa. Nearby is El Correcaminos Restaurant, which serves Mexican food in an attractive setting. After lunch, drive north to L.A. Cetto (www.cettowines.com), one of the oldest and largest wineries in Mexico, known for its nebbiolo grape varietals. In contrast, and a few yards up the dirt road from L.A. Cillo, is La Casa de Doña Lupe (+52 (646) 155 2323). Doña Lupe features organic wines and foods as well as Kumeyaay Indian crafts.

At the end of the day, the Ruta del Vino’s location makes it easy for safe and sober drivers to travel south on Highway 3 back to Ensenada for dinner.

Mexico is the perfect summer vacation destination, you can choose between old world cities and picturesque beaches. Unlike the Caribbean islands, traveling to Mexico is much more affordable because you can drive there. Popular destinations include Monterrey, Tampico, Tijuana, and Mazatlan.

Driving in Mexico is no different than driving anywhere else, but there are some precautions you should take.

1) It is crucial that you get Mexican car insurance for the duration of your stay. No one plans to get in a collision, but you should always be prepared. Mexican officials may not accept foreign insurance, and similarly the coverage of many American insurance companies do not extend across the border.

2) Try to drive during the day. When driving unfamiliar roads it is always a good idea to drive when visibility is at the highest, this way you can see road conditions and easily spot road signs. In addition to visibility, drivers are often fatigued at night.

3) Buy a Spanish phrase book. If you experience car trouble and need help finding a mechanic or changing a flat tire, you will likely need to ask another person for help. Try your best with pronunciation, and likely others will get the gist of your request.

Enjoy your vacation, and don’t forget to bring sunscreen!

Road trips can open the door to many adventures. Motoring south of the border to La Paz in Baja California can add swimming with whale sharks to the list of experiences not to be missed. Migrating from the west coast of Australia, whale sharks tend to gather in the nutrient rich Baja waters each autumn. These impressive polka dot beauties are the largest fish in the sea and though they can reach up to 60 tons in weight and measure in the neighborhood of 30 feet, they have a most amicable nature.

Yet for all that size, whale sharks feed on plankton, krill and algae through filers on their enormous jaws. As long as one keeps an eye on the massive tail and a respectful distance from the gaping, filtering mouth, whale sharks are quite approachable. These creatures tend to swim near the surface as they feed, making it easy for snorkelers and SCUBA divers to get up close and personal, perhaps even to touch. Photo op anyone?

La Paz, Mexico is the perfect family friendly destination for not only encounters with these gentle giants, but also for deep sea fishing, kayaking, whale watching or just floating on an inner tube off of an eye popping white sand beach. Pack up the car, load up the cooler and point your horseless carriage south for the adventure of a lifetime.

Just off the Mexico No. 2 highway, Cananea is a fascinating mix of past and present.

Famous today for its copper mining industry, Cananea made history in 1906 when a mining strike in the town sparked the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. Artifacts of the Revolution can be seen in the Cananea Jail, now refurbished as a museum.

Visitors can also see the mansion of Colonel William Greene, considered to be the founder of modern Cananea, which now serves as a guest house for astronomers visiting the nearby Guillermo Haro Observatory, home of the largest pinpoint telescope in Latin America.

Other points of interest include the Mexicana de Cananea Museum, which houses exhibits about the town’s mining history, and the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe church. Visitors can also take in the surrounding scenery on guided hikes, or relax on the golf course at Club Campestre, which is open to the public.

Guaymas, located on the Sea of Cortez, is an important port in Sonora. Many people make the easy car trip from Arizona driving south to Guaymas and its close neighbor the beach zone of San Carlos. Despite its size, the city has a distinct personality.

Spanish explorers first arrived and named the area in the 1530′s, but it wasn’t until around the 1700′s that the mission San Jose de Guaymas was founded. It was about 60 more years till the township of Guaymas was founded, but it quickly became an important port.

Visitors should make a point to drive to see the historic mission of San Jose de Guaymas, the colonial style city hall and jail, the beautiful church of San Fernando, the Sacred Heart Church, and the neo-classical architecture of the Bank of Sonora.

The sea itself should not be ignored. The fishing itself is worth the drive down from the states and many people make it for just that or to snorkel or scuba through the clear waters. You can drive to the beautiful beaches and walk along the ocean and up the trials into the nearby hills to truly experience the beauty of this region and get a marvelous view of the sparkling sea below.

Other points of interest involve driving to El Sahuaral to see the giant cacti or driving to visit the neighboring Yaqui villages. With so much to see and do, this city is an unforgettable experience and one you will want to repeat.
